:: Friends of Alas Kasih

In early 1998, Ade a member of our group was in Indonesia on business. One night while staying at a small hotel in Kuta something strange occurred. Sitting on the footpath eating Baso she was befriended by a young boy who was about 14 or so. Without explanation or even an introduction he told her of an Orphanage where the kids couldn’t go to school because there was no money and further that sometimes there was very little or no food to eat. The place was in a small town called Negara more than 100 kilometers from Denpasar. The boy’s story was disturbing but before Ade could get all the information she wanted he disappeared never to be seen again.

That night Ade found it difficult to sleep and tossed and turned while thinking or dreaming of these children and their poor circumstances. When daylight arrived she decided that she must immediately go to the town mentioned to see if she could find out if there was truth in the story she had heard.

Well she did find ‘Alas Kasih’ and it was true that there was almost no food and no money for education. She returned to Kuta and immediately set about raising money so that she could send a truckload of rice for the children.

On arriving back in Australia Ade gave her news to the group
(The Pilbara Indonesia Australia Friendship Group) and thus begun the relationship, which to this point or time has enabled many changes to take place at ‘Alas Kasih’.

Now all the children go to school, their education costs being paid by the Group and private sponsors. PIAFG has also bought new mattresses, furniture and paid for various renovations that make life for the approximately 55 children much more comfortable and stable than it was before.

Not everyone agrees with Ade that the ‘boy’ was sent by God in order that she would find ‘Alas Kasih but there is no doubt the work we are doing is worth while and that we are helping to give these children a brighter better future.

:: History of Alas Kasih (Early Pilbara Indonesia - Australia Friendship Group)

The Pilbara Indonesia Australia Friendship Group was founded in Port Hedland Western Australia in 1994.

A group of friends who loved Indonesia and its people started to meet irregularly to enjoy music and food from Indonesia and latter founded the group.

Among other things they started Indonesian Language Classes that ran for 4 plus years. A service has always been provided for any new settlers from Indonesia and money has been raised for various charities and projects involving Indonesia and Indonesian people. Another popular activity has been the “Indonesian Night’ fundraiser where Indonesia culture, food and dancing provides the back drop for a fantastic "Saturday Night out". Members of the Group have also been involved in both the learning and teaching of Indonesian and generally publicizing the culture and beauty of Indonesia.

In 1998 we started supporting Alas Kasih Orphanage. From the starting gift of a ‘truck load of rice’ our contributions to Alas Kasih have risen to where we pay for all the children’s education, support a health fund for medical emergencies, and are involved in various ‘projects’ supplying funds for renovations, new furniture and other needs that arise.

At the moment we are trying to increase the number of private sponsors who support particular children for an on going period of time. Money is always needed but the sponsors also cater for a need to be wanted and cared for in these children. They are so proud and pleased to have someone care about them and exchange letters.

Another current project is to have all the children’s teeth checked and treated at least once a year. Of course they are not pleased to go to the dentist but months of ‘toothache’ affects their school progress and general health.

To this point of time several students have graduated from University with degrees or at least certificat level study.Unfortunately the Pilbara Australian Indonesian Friendship Group no longer exists but a group of friends from Australia and overseas continues to sponsor children and help all the Alas kasih kids towards a better life.
